GCRYPT V0.1.0 user guide.
The procedures below reflect the documented features and behavior of V0.1.0.
Application language
By default, GCRYPT follows the Windows, macOS, or Linux session language: French for fr-* locales and English for all others. To override it: ⚙ SETTINGS → Language → Automatic / Français / English. The change is immediate and this non-sensitive preference is stored locally.
Encrypt
Open ENCRYPT.
Select or drop a file, or use Direct text.
Enter and confirm a password of at least 12 characters.
Choose the output folder.
Click ENCRYPT. The output uses GCRYPT V1.
Decrypt
Open DECRYPT.
Drop a .gcrypt file.
Enter the password.
Choose the output folder.
Start decryption. GCRYPT automatically detects V1 or V2.
Compress
Open COMPRESS and choose a file or folder.
Choose Fast, Balanced, or Maximum.
Choose the output folder.
Click CREATE ZIP.
| Profile | Deflate |
|---|---|
| Fast | 1 |
| Balanced | 6 |
| Maximum | 9 |
An already-compressed format such as JPG or MP4 may shrink very little. After creation, GCRYPT reads the ZIP again before reporting success and displays the size before/after plus the gain or overhead.
Compress + encrypt
The documented pipeline remains:
file → Zstandard → encryption → .gcrypt V2
folder → internal TAR → Zstandard → encryption → .gcrypt V2
| Profile | Zstandard level |
|---|---|
| Fast | 1 |
| Balanced | 3 |
| Maximum | 19 |
Password generator
Uppercase, lowercase, digits, and symbols can be configured. The result can be copied or sent directly to ENCRYPT or COMPRESS + ENCRYPT. The interface also displays a theoretical entropy estimate intended for passwords generated randomly by GCRYPT.
Settings
- Dark / Light: immediately changes the application theme and stores that non-sensitive preference locally.
- Memory purge: never, or after 1, 5, 15, 30, or 60 minutes of inactivity.
- Clear now: immediately purges sensitive information kept in memory.
- Windows: status, installation, and removal of the .gcrypt association.
An active operation is never interrupted by the automatic purge. Non-sensitive preferences are stored in settings.conf.
File association
Windows
Recommended method: SETTINGS → .gcrypt file association → ASSOCIATE .GCRYPT. The association is installed for the current user and does not require administrator rights.
macOS
The bundle declares the .gcrypt document type. After extraction, launch GCRYPT.app at least once so macOS can register the bundle.
Linux
chmod +x ./ASSOCIER_GCRYPT_LINUX.sh
./ASSOCIER_GCRYPT_LINUX.sh
To remove it: ./ASSOCIER_GCRYPT_LINUX.sh --remove
Verify a download
Every GCRYPT V0.1.0 package includes a SHA-256 checksum. The exact commands are grouped on the Download page.
